Do you have a chip in your windshield that is right in your line of vision and is driving you crazy? Thankfully, your local auto parts store sells kits that have the tools you need to get this job done. Here is how you can repair a chipped windshield on your own.

Clean the Glass Chip

The first thing you'll want to do is clean out the chip as well as you can. You can use a thin needle or pushpin to dig out the inside of the chip since you want to remove as much loose class as possible. You should then clean the exterior of the chip with an alcohol wipe, which will clean the surface and get rid of that loose glass. The reason for using an alcohol wipe is that it evaporates quickly so the surface is dry.

Isolate the Chip

Your chip repair kit should have a sticky circular pad with a hole in it, which is designed to isolate the chip in your windshield. When applying the pad, check it from inside your vehicle to make sure that there are no air bubbles under the pad. When it's set, you can peel off the top layer of the pad to reveal the sticky layer.

Attach the Plunger

There will be a plunger that sticks directly on top of the sticker that you just applied to the windshield. Make sure it is lined up perfectly when you put it on since it is designed to center the plunger directly on top of the windshield chip.

Apply the Resin

The resin should come in a small tube that will squeeze directly into the plunger. Empty the contents into the plumber, then use the supplied syringe to remove the air from the area. The syringe will stay in that position with it in the plunger with the syringe pulled back, and you'll see air bubbles start coming up into the syringe. It helps to lightly tap on the windshield around the plunger to get the air loose and come up through the plunger. You'll then let the resin cure by leaving it for the specified amount of time, and then apply pressure to the resin by pushing air back into the plunger and waiting some more

Remove the Plunger

You'll be instructed to remove the plunger after a specified amount of time, which will involve using a razor blade to peel back the circular pad. You can then clean off any residual resin with a paper towel to clean the surrounding surface.

Apply the Curing Strip

The final step is to apply a drop of resin to the crack and apply a curing strip on top of it, which is a clear piece of plastic. Remove the air bubbles and expose the windshield to the sun, which should cure the resin. Peel back the curing strip after the specified amount of time, scrape off the excess resin with a razor blade, and the chip should be repaired.
